In this lecture, Laurence Caruana will delve into the history and variations of this painting method, from the traditional ‘oil and egg tempera method’ to acrylics and beyond. More so, he’ll explore the many ‘ways of seeing’ made possible through this technique.
The Mischtechnik is a layered approach to painting that alternates between figures in opalescent white and glazes of translucent colour. It allows the artist to achieve many extra-ordinary effects like radiant haloes, shimmering energy lines and iridescent jewels.
Since Ernst Fuchs rediscovered the Mischtechnik in the 1950s, it has undergone a variety of fascinating transformations in the hands of his students (Klarwein, De Es, Venosa etc). After assisting Professor Fuchs at the turn of the millennium, Laurence Caruana & Amanda Sage began transmitting their own versions of the Mischtechnik in their popular Summer Seminars at Torri Superiore. Today, through institutions like ViTra and The Vienna Academy of Visionary Art, a new generation of Visionary artists continues to explore the possibilities and push the boundaries of this fascinating technique.
