“It’s done in the Mischtechnik.”

“The WHAT?”

The Mischtechnik is a layered approach to painting that alternates between figures in opalescent white and glazes of translucent colour.

It allows the artist to achieve many extra-ordinary effects like radiant haloes, shimmering energy lines and iridescent jewels.

In this lecture, Laurence Caruana will delve into the history and variations of this painting method, from the traditional ‘oil and egg tempera method’ to acrylics and beyond.

More so, he’ll explore the many ‘ways of seeing’ made possible through this technique.

Since Ernst Fuchs rediscovered the Mischtechnik in the 1950s, it has undergone a variety of fascinating transformations in the hands of his students (Klarwein, De Es, Venosa etc).

After assisting Professor Fuchs at the turn of the millennium, Laurence Caruana & Amanda Sage began transmitting their own versions of the Mischtechnik in their popular Summer Seminars at Torri Superiore. Today, through institutions like ViTra and The Vienna Academy of Visionary Art, a new generation of Visionary artists continues to explore the possibilities and push the boundaries of this fascinating technique.

INSTRUCTOR

LAURENCE CARUANA

Laurence Caruana’s highly-symbolic works explore the interplay of myth, visions and dreams while integrating different sacred traditions.

Born in Toronto Canada of Maltese descent, he is a graduate of The University of Toronto (B.A. Hons. Philosophy) and also studied painting with Prof. Ernst Fuchs of Vienna, assisting him in his studios in Monaco and Castillon.

For years, the artist led an itinerant existence, living variously in Malta, Vienna, Munich and Monaco while travelling extensively through Asia, Europe and Central America to enrich his passion for different cultural iconographies.

With his French wife he settled in Paris, alternating between a studio in the Bastille quarter and a farmhouse in the Bourgogne region of France. In 2012, he co-founded the Vienna Academy of Visionary Art, where he served as director for seven years before returning to France to pursue a new project, The Apocryphon Chapel, which depicts the Gnostic Apocryphon of John in twelve large-scale paintings.

As author, artist and lecturer, he frequently travels abroad or appears on the web as a guest speaker, while exhibiting his works internationally.
